[Eye Candy] Spotlight on Petite Friture
We started the week with shower curtains, and although I thought my selection of funky designs almost made them seem like the new must-have in home decor, I thought I should try and raise the bar slightly today. And how better to do that than to have a little spotlight on an up-and-coming French design studio that is just too cool for school? Let me present: Petite Friture.
Petite Friture (translate: whitebait) is not exactly your usual/traditional design company but part of a new breed of French 'design editors'. Set up five years ago by Paris-based designer Amelie Du Passage (#girlcrushalert), Petite Friture aims to promote young talents (hence the name: kind of bring to light young species of fish, if you like?!) and work in collaboration with them to create and produce beautiful home decor objects, lighting and small furniture. It's a really clever concept that helps discover young designers and artists that might not have enough exposure (or the thick rolodex yet) to produce and distribute their own range. The result: a mouth-watering collection of stunning, vibrant and more importantly eclectic pieces at affordable price points.
One of the newest pieces of their collection is the Nubilo sofa. This little drop of design heaven was imagined by Constance Guisset (#secondgirlcrushalert) for Petite Friture. I can't decide if it looks like the cutest collection of pebbles, balloons or clouds, but to be honest, who cares when the result looks this fabulous? I have dropped a series of heavy hints at Mr Stella + the Stars that this little beaut would look right at home in my office so let's just all hope my subliminal persuasion techniques won't fail me this time...
You know we are have a serious penchant for animals here at Stella + the Stars HQ (you don't?? Ok, check out the menagerie in our little Chez Moi gallery then and it will all become clear...), so imagine the loud squeal of delight when Stella and I laid our eyes on those indecently fabulous Petstools designed by Hanna Ernsting (introducing Ella, Daisy and Finn below)...
Then, there is this series of three geometrical metallic mirrors designed by Federico Floriani. I spotted these at the Heal's press preview AW15 last month and instantly fell in love with this copper model. They just look like like futuristic painted masks over kind of geometrical shamans' faces? Sounds totally bonkers but it just works.
For smaller budgets, Petite Friture have also produced a range of home accessories including the Curiosity collection designed by Sam Baron, which includes the bunny-ear kitchen jar and plates below. Adore!
And I couldn't not mention their flagship piece: the Vertigo ceiling lamp. This is another exquisite piece of design by Constance Guisset. Because the structure of the lamp is so light, it's almost weightless, Vertigo moves softly with the rhythm of the wind. I know it sounds like I have gone all cringe poetry on you but you must see it in action in this Youtube video. Amazing, right? When a lamp becomes a sculpture... Oh and if you're a pastel kind of design lover, I have got some good news: to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Vertigo light they've released a limited edition in pink and pale blue. SWOON...
I hope this French gem of a company has somewhat inspired you. This is certainly now an exhaustive list but more like my favourite piece from the new collection. The whole Petite Friture range is available on their website and from Made in Design. Prices range from £20 for the accessories to £1800 for the grey Nubilo sofa.
Happy swooning! I mean, shopping...
